April 1, 2026 • San Francisco, CA

SAN FRANCISCO — April 1, 2026 — Global Finance Calculators, a free international financial tools platform used by digital nomads, expats, and remote workers worldwide, today published its inaugural Q1 2026 Global Cost of Living Report, a comprehensive analysis of cost-of-living data across 121 cities in 40 countries.

Key Findings

The report reveals a 6.8x cost gap between the world's cheapest and most expensive cities. Surabaya, Indonesia ranks as the most affordable city globally, with a combined Cost of Living + Rent Index of just 13.8 (NYC = 100) and a comfortable monthly budget of approximately $552. At the other extreme, Zurich, Switzerland commands the highest index at 93.4, with a comfortable budget of $5,563/month — over 10x more.

Additional highlights include:

  • Southeast Asia dominates affordability: Seven of the 10 cheapest cities are in Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, or Thailand.
  • New York City has the world's highest rent: At $3,182/month for a one-bedroom city-centre apartment, NYC surpasses even Zurich ($2,782) and Singapore ($3,120).
  • 47 cities offer a comfortable lifestyle under $2,000/month, including European destinations like Málaga, Valencia, Porto, and Kraków, plus Japanese cities Kyoto and Osaka.
  • The global average one-bedroom rent is $1,092/month, with Asia averaging just $515 — less than half the European average of $1,248.
  • India remains the cheapest country at a national COL+Rent index of 18.2, while Switzerland tops the list at 84.6.
  • Best value discovery: Dammam, Saudi Arabia, ranks #1 for purchasing-power-to-cost ratio, offering residents the most economic value relative to local prices.

About the Report

The Q1 2026 Global Cost of Living Report uses Numbeo-sourced cost indices, rent data, grocery prices, restaurant costs, and purchasing-power metrics. All 121 cities and 40 countries are benchmarked against New York City (index = 100). Budget calculations model two scenarios: minimal (suburban apartment, basic needs) and comfortable (city-centre apartment, regular dining out, full transit).
